The warbow is built for strength and warfare

A warbow is defined by the power or strength needed to draw the bow to its full draw. Nowadays we find 30-32 inch a full draw. Most arrows found in the Tudor warship The Mary Rose were 28-30 inch but shorter and longer arrows were also found. After the descriptions by The English Warbow Society and the Dutch Warbow Society when bow exceeds 70 lbs it is classified as a warbow. Historically world wide, 120-160 lbs bows were no exception. To cast heavy arrows over a battlefield only bows over 120 lbs will give the long casts.

In history bows were affordable weapons compared to swords and poleaxes, and could be made in great numbers. The bows took many years to master, but when mastered, it was a formidable artillery weapon capable of casting a quarter-pound arrow over 250 yards, creating devastating effects on the battlefield in England and all over Europe. To be shooting bows like these an evening per week will not do. Warbow archers wanting to master their bow will need to train daily to find the correct technique and develop muscle control and muscle strength.

Warbow draw weight and sizing

Warbows were designed to shoot a very heavy projectile over a long distance with enough kinetic energy to do damage and kill both horse and rider. A modern lower poundage longbow might reach the distance with a lightweighed arrow, but will lack the energy to penetrate even the thinnest armour. To draw a bow fully and transfer the energy stored to the arrow a long bow is needed. Medieval longbows were typically over 76 inch length. Medieval archers trained from youth and daily. Just buying a heavy bow, does not make you an instant warbow archer and could cause injuries. Gain strength and technique, and enjoy archery for a long time.

Crafted for extreme draw weights

At fairbow bow woods are selected with great care. Only the best woods survive the selection. After cutting bowwoods to size for lamination, the wood is graded again, and only the best is stored for kits or our own laminations. Laminating is performed in a temperature- and pressure-controlled environment using modern techniques and adhesives. The staves are shaped in and tillered by hand. After tillering real horn nocks are glued on and the bows are again checked for correct tiller. All the English bows are scrutinized so we can give you a full-year warranty. After varnishing and oil treatment, the bows are checked again and fitted with a leather grip. We stock bows for immediate delivery, and we also make English longbows to your specifications. Custom bows can take up to 5-7 months to make. Our bows need little aftercare apart from periodically replacing the Flemish strings, and an occasional wipe with furniture wax.

Typical drawweights for English Warbows are between 70lb and 120 lbs although warbows over 120 lbs are not uncommon.

When shooting target archery at a club or a local archery range, a warbow is not suited for beginners. A fit and strong archer might begin with a warbow when under close guidance by an experienced warbow archer. It is good practise to slowly grow into warbow archery, starting at lower draw weights and gradually gain strength and technique to get into higher draw weights.
