CROSSBOWS AND PARTS
Fairbow stocks crossbows for reenactment and SCA purposes, for hunting, and for target shooting. Most often, crossbow prods are made from modern materials (in case of SCA bows, these are often hidden in look-alike medieval materials). Foam, carbon fibre, fiberglass, or laminated bows are choices made by the manufacturer.

Different types of crossbows
The stock can be made to resemble medieval finds, or economical designs fit for hunting or target use, in bright colors, black for tactical, or camouflaged for hunting purposes. The energy stored in the prod when fully loaded is maintained until the trigger is pushed and the release system is activated. This is often combined with a safety switch to prevent accidental loosing. As crossbows can be cocked with a cocking aid and the energy stored in the prod can be maintained for longer periods, crossbows are ideal for hunting situations. You can patientliy sit in a treestand waiting for the game to show itself while the bow is at the ready. Many crossbows can be fitted with modern scopes and aiming devices, making a well-placed shot achievable for all users.
Choosing the right crossbow
When choosing a crossbow, firstly have its intended use in mind: hobby, target shooting, hunting. This will narrow the field and make it easier for you to choose. Recurve crossbows are easier to maintain by yourself, parts and components are easier to replace, and often more affordable than parts for a compound crossbow. Replacing parts on a compound crossbow often requires specialist's knowledge and specialist tools. Compound crossbows are often easier to cock and have a higher efficiency ratio, making a lower draw weight punch out the bolt faster and giving the crossbow bolt more kinetic energy. Modern compound crossbows are often smaller and narrower than recurve crossbows, making the compound crossbow often better for tactical purposes or hunting purposes. The recurved crossbow is often quieter, less noisy, and gives fewer vibrations, making the recurved crossbow easier to shoot.
Craftsmanship, safety & service
Fairbow only stocks quality crossbows. We provide direct carry-in service and have qualified staff to help you with the maintenance of your crossbow or provide help if needed. As the crossbow is always braced, and the string often touches the tiller when shot, it is imperative you keep an eye on the string. When it starts to show wear and tear, replace the string so no accidents can happen and you can depend on the correct workings of your tool. Always use the correct string wax (often supplied with the bow) and lubricant for the trigger mechanism. Please use the correct brands and make. When the trigger mechanism creates exscessive wear on the bowstring contact us so we can service the mechnaism or help you to do it yourself. Depending on the brand of the crossbow, the warranty could be as long as lifetime, if the bow has been looked after well.
FAQ
A crossbow is almost always braced, in other words, the bow is always fitted with a string on tension. How long can the crossbow be cocked with a bolt? Depending on the make and model of a crossbow it can be cocked for a long time, at least several hours. If it is wise to keep a crossbow cocked when not in use is a different matter.
A crossbow can shoot very long distances depending on the draw weight and powerstroke of the crossbow. For a target distance 100 meters is often the maximum and for hunting 50 meters is often seen as the max optimum distance.
For most countries, owning a crossbow does not require a license or permit. Often just a minimum age of 18 yrs. Outdoor use is often separately legislated. Hunting with a (cross-)bow often has different rules altogether. Please check local laws and regulations
