Our U-Finish Bow
With a U-Finish bow, we have already done the structural and technical work. We shape the riser, form and tiller the limbs so both bend evenly, and cut the arrow shelf where the design calls for one. The bow then leaves the workshop unfinished: unsanded, unlacquered and unstrung. Your job is the final stretch. You sand through progressively finer grits, apply an oil or lacquer finish, and fit a bowstring matched to the bow. If you like, you can add a leather grip wrap or set your own nocking point. The tiller and draw weight are already established and checked, so the work you do is finishing, not engineering.
Who can use a U-Finish Bow?
A U-Finish bow rewards anyone who enjoys working with their hands: Archers who want to understand their gear, woodworkers curious about bow building, and budget-minded shooters who would rather invest time than money. You also decide the look yourself, from the sheen of the finish to the grip. It suits you less if you want a ready-to-shoot bow with no extra steps, or if you lack the time or a clean, dry workspace to sand and finish properly. You will need sandpaper in several grits, a finishing oil or lacquer, and a bowstring matched to the bow. Note that draw weight and draw length are sometimes set when you order: you finish the surface, and if you so desire the tillering or the drawweight.
Craftsmanship (before it reaches you)
Before a U-Finish bow reaches you, it has been through the same care as our finished bows. We select the wood by hand, using species like Hickory, Ash and bamboo cores laminated with Fiberglass, chosen for the bow style and draw weight. The limbs are shaped and tillered until they bend evenly, and we check limb symmetry, tiller and draw weight before the bow ships. So while the surface arrives raw, the part that decides how the bow shoots is already settled. The U-Finish range covers traditional styles such as longbows and flatbows, and you can specify your draw weight and draw length when you order. What you add is the finish; what we guarantee is a sound, properly tillered bow.
FAQ
Yes, once you have sanded it, applied the finish and fitted a suitable bowstring, checked final tillering, the bow is ready to shoot. Let the oil or lacquer cure fully first, brace the bow to the correct height, and check the string and nocks before your first arrow.
Yes, you choose the draw weight and draw length when you order, just as you would with a finished bow. We set the tiller to those specifications before the bow ships. Unless you order a floor tillered or Primary stave in which case you will have to do the tillering and we have done the rough shaping for you.
Not much, and nothing exotic. You need sandpaper in a range of grits to work from coarse to fine, a finishing oil or a lacquer, and a brush or cloth to apply it. To string the bow you need a bowstring matched to its length and draw weight, and ideally a bow stringer. A leather grip wrap and basic masking tape are optional extras for a cleaner result. If you start from a floortillered stave: a rasp, a scraping tool, might save you a lot of time.
