Was macht einen Englischen Langbogen aus?
English Longbow sizes and dimensions
Nowadays, English longbows require very little practise to give satisfying results. As English longbows were drawn to the ear (historically) they are longer than more modern longbows like the American style bows. The full wooden construction requires a long bit of wood usually 190-200 cm making the bow fit for drawlengths over 28 inch.
Historically, English longbows were for very heavy arrows and had very high drawweights. These days we are no longer used to such straining archery practises and draw weights usually range between 25 and 60 lb measured at a 28 inch drawlength. Experienced archers usually get into the bow a bit more and use a drawweight around 50 lb for 3d archery and hunting. Do not start with a high draw weight, as you will not achieve proper form and may develop bad habits in your archery routine.
Craftsmanship
At fairbow bow woods are selected with great care. Only the best woods survive the selection. After cutting bowwoods to size for lamination, the wood is graded again, and only the best is stored for kits or our own laminations. Laminating is performed in a temperature- and pressure-controlled environment using modern techniques and adhesives. The staves are shaped in and tillered by hand. After tillering real horn nocks are glued on and the bows are again checked for correct tiller. All the English bows are scrutinized so we can give you a full-year warranty. After varnishing and oil treatment, the bows are checked again and fitted with a leather grip. We stock bows for immediate delivery, and we also make English longbows to your specifications. Custom bows can take up to 5-7 months to make. Our bows need little aftercare apart from periodically replacing the Flemish strings, and an occasional wipe with furniture wax.
FAQ
We recommend starting shooting English longbows in the lower drawweight range. For target and 3d archery, 25 -30 lbs is a good starting point. The low drawweight gives you time to work on the archery stance and your shooting form before the high draw weight makes you develop bad archery habits. The English is not good at storing energy at low draw weights. It is not very effective for hunting, for instance. The English longbow is shot for the love of archery, for the love of history. Not using fiberglass limits the bow compared to modern longbows. If speed is your game, an American Longbow or a recurved bow might be better suited.
The English longbow was an effective weapon of war because of the fast rate of shooting. (Firing). It was relatively easy to make bows (compared to swords, axes, etc.), but they took years to master up to military levels. The long draw made the energy stored in the bow shoot heavy arrows a long way with high energy, creating devastating effects on badly armoured soldiers. With training, archers could fire rapid volleys, creating arrow rain on their opponents for up to 250 yards.
The length of the draw could be limited by the length of the English longbow. To ensure the bow's longevity, a long piece of wood needs to be used. We recommend using English longbows no shorter than 72 inches for a 28-inch draw length. But be careful for clout-shooting or roving: You might use a longer drawlength and a different stance, hence a longer bow might be required. For this purpose, we make most English longbows 76-78 inches long.
